An uneven package

"Around the World in 80 Days" is not luckily Jackie's worst film, that is still "Tuxedo". What makes 80 Days such a taunting movie is its unevenness. The film switches between light-hearted to serious and even between various styles of comedy, from Jackie's classic slapstick, to witty, to vain, to gross-out and even Python-style comedy. As far as fight-scenes go, they are well choreographed and Jackie can luckily still kick ass. There were some parts of the film that didn't make a whole lot of sense and because of the massiveness of the plot it feels rather long. Luckily the changes in style keep the viewer on their toes but the climax was not very satisfying however. All in all, Around the World in 80 Days is an amusing film to watch. It has both great and not-so-great moments and may be a little too unconventional for Jackie's fans, but a good movie none the less.

Worth a second viewing

Perhaps, I was too snooty when I saw this the first time. I was in that era when I was starting to take film study seriously. On first viewing, I was turned off by all the low-brow jokes and felt the oncoming creep of a movie calendar built around blockbusters at the expense of story. I similarly felt angry that another film that year, Troy, watered down the mythology so that we wouldn't be distracted from the main draw of watching Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, and Brad Pitt while shirtless. Similarly, I originally thought "How Dare They Shortchange Jules Vernes' story! This is a blatant attempt to showcase this B-level actor's martial arts." How silly I was to think of Jackie Chan's martial arts as something of a sideshow. I still feel like Jackie Chan could up his game as an actor during the scenes where he's not fighting, but the elaborate staging and acrobatics is fully realized art. The film is kid-friendly and an adult will need to see it on those terms to fully enjoy the film. If you can do that, you'll find the film to be a little exaggerated in its acting, but ultimately sweet, adventurous and a decent homage to the original (with the addition of more karate kicks).

Terribly misjudged and underrated

IMDb rating is currently 5.8/10. Movie was nominated only for Razzie and Stinker Awards, and financially it's one of the biggest fiascos in history. Of the invested over 100 million, it pulled out about 20%. I'm asking myself who's crazy here... I think that the main problem is that most of the people view this film as either the adaptation of Verne's novel or as a remake of the 1956 film of the same name. In both cases movie would be a failure, but this is neither remake nor adaptation of the novel, so the bad reputation is caused by prejudice rather than the real quality of the film. Script is based on Verne's novel, but but this adventure comedy is a homage to Vern, not an adaptation. Story is modernized, enriched with new adventures and references to many personalities and events, and combines genres with taste and measure in a comedy that keeps the attention and smile on the face from the beginning till the end. When criticizing this film, we must not lose sight of the fact that it is Disney and that accordingly it must be children-friendly. Apart from Schwarzenegger, from whom we don't expect much anyway, the acting is very good. In addition to Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan, who are the bearers of this film, in other roles appear many famous faces, among which are C├ęcile de France, Jim Broadbent, Ian McNeice, Ewen Bremner, Macy Gray, Rob Schneider, Luke and Owen Wilson, John Cleese and excellent Kathy Bates as the Queen. In my opinion, only those who do not like comedy and adventure as a genre could be dissatisfied with this film, but such people are not competent to judge it and it certainly is not fair that they influence its ratings. 8/10
